Mentoring as a PBworker

This is a new experience
since I have received the first email from Christine; I have started seriously doing my tasks.
First, I had to do my assignment to fully understand and what is needed. A teacher/mentor preparation is crucial in the success of any course delivering or homework. You should know what we are preaching.

My task besides the other mentors is to read and check if the homework has been done perfectly, answering the participant questions and providing help, suggestions for participants struggling to do their activities. Sometimes, I feel unsure; therefore, I check my skills before telling the other what to do. You have to visit the participants' pages and see what their problem is. Receiving an email does immediate answer, then.

I believe that once you start moderating it means you have so how mastered the skills and know find your way through. By doing the activities for the second time, I am sure I am benefiting a lot. What's more is acquiring the skills of moderating other participants.

Week one: answer

High School: answer these questions.

http://powerofone.pbwiki.com

  • How did this teacher integrate a wiki with her research project?

A detailed procedure is provided to help students carry out their projects. It is used by students to submit their assignments. There checking points that students can rely on. They are resources to be used to learn more or to muster their skills.

  • How did this teacher organize the site? Can you think of a better way to clearly group pages?

All the information is provided in the front page: introduction, students’ names (Old ones), rubrics for evaluation. The students are sure to gain particular points if ever they have done their assignments. There is another to be used. It is using the “sidebar” for more links and rubrics.

  • Look at the page history for the student research papers; can you see how often each page was edited?

When you check “View all files” to view all the files created in that PBwork or later view all pages, you can see how many times each file or page is edited

  • How would you grade the student work on this site? (IE: "I would consider the final product, the level of activity, how often students commented on each others work...")

The final products should be given a mark. Also, how much valuable contributions of the students are: commenting, suggesting or coming up with new questions

  • How is this wiki different from a collaborative wiki? What purpose does this site serve?

This is not a collaborative wiki. It is for students to check about their daily assignment for Monday to Friday without any activities for them during the weekends. There a lot of links to other pages in the same wiki. It is called cooperative education where the students are invited to provide other resources by emailing them to Mr. Camper

  • Why is this wiki useful to students?

It is useful to students for checking all the guidelines and the content that should be dealt with on a daily basis or weekly one. We do not know when the pages are updated. There are a variety of classes and courses on the front page, including a record of previous courses, and a summer course to provide more opportunities for students to continue learning.

  • How did this teacher outline his homework assignments and make them accessible to his students?

The students have to have account, as mentioned on the page. (Though it is not accessible) (Access to your school network account from home): Sign-in using your LOGIN and PASSWORD as you would at school. Students can also click on links to take them to the needed course.

  • Can you find instructions to the current event project? What were students asked to do?

Yes, the students to follow the given instructions: They are asked to log in and ask for their pass words if they have forgotten them. They are supposed to select their current event.

  • Do you notice that the student pages have a standardized set of information? How did this happen ;)

Yes, they just insert a table with the needed lines and repeat the same information. There is only a difference in the teachers’ names. However, when you click on the links, there are different data.

  • Is this a collaborative workspace or a way to share information from the teacher to the student?

It is a way to share information with students

  • How would you grade the student work on this site? (IE: "I would consider the final product, the level of activity, how often students commented on each others work...")

Actually, the possible way for me is considering the final product and the contribution of the students: comment, suggestions, recommendations, and innovations.

The students can only view the front page of this PBwork. They cannot modify: adding or deleting any item. However, they have access to other pages to view all the files and pages. You don't have permission to look at GrantBook - Private and Personal Information.”

In this blog, I will be comment on the use of BPwork or what is used to be called PBwiki.

It is an enriching open page for everyone to edit to contribute the success of a given project. It can be used by students effectively to enhance their knowledge and skills.
